Ashraf Hamdy, Head of the Commercial Representation Office in the UAE, said that there are promising opportunities for Egyptian furniture exports in the UAE, given the large Emirati imports of these products annually.
Hamdi explained, during a virtual “online” seminar held by the Furniture Export Council today in cooperation with the Commercial Representation Authority under the title “Opportunities for Egyptian furniture exports to exist in the United Arab Emirates”, that China alone accounts for 35% of the UAE’s furniture imports by about $ 553 million.
He said that Emirati imports of furniture amounted to about $ 1.5 billion in 2019, of which Egypt’s share was $ 30 million, and it is not commensurate with this market and the opportunity for the Egyptian product.
He pointed out that Italy accounts for 13% of furniture imports in the UAE by about 204 million dollars, and in the third place comes the United States with about 71 million dollars, then Poland with 4%, about 70 million dollars.
He pointed out that there is a good opportunity for expanding the export of kitchen furniture and hotel furnishings, most of which depend on manufactured wood and not traditional furniture.
He said that the UAE is witnessing a boom in the construction and construction of hotel apartments and hotels, coinciding with the imminent establishment of the Expo 2020 Dubai, in which representatives from more than 180 countries will participate in next October for a period of 6 months.
It was mentioned that the Commercial Representation Authority, in cooperation with the Egyptian Exhibitions Authority, will negotiate with the Emirati side to hold separate exhibitions on the sidelines of the Dubai Expo 2020, and there is also a good opportunity that could be exploited if specialized exhibitions in the field of furniture industry were held in Sharjah, especially as the customers ’taste is close to Egyptian tastes. .
For his part, Mohamed Alaa, Director of Government Services Department at the Furniture Export Council, said that Egypt’s furniture exports to the UAE recorded $ 31 million during 2020 compared to $ 33 million in 2019.
He added that the UAE ranks second in the largest importer of furniture from Egypt after Saudi Arabia, which occupies the first place, and there is also an advantage for the Egyptian product for this market, which enjoys customs exemption through an agreement to facilitate and develop trade exchange between Arab countries, which gives customs exemption for goods by 100 percent. %, Provided that an added value of not less than 40% is achieved.
He said that the council will continue its activities in holding seminars to raise the export capabilities of companies. It also aims, during the coming period, to participate in major exhibitions as they return during the coming period.
