Inflation rose 1.6 percent in September and 4.7 percent on an annual basis

Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics showed today, Sunday, a rise in inflation in Egypt during the month of September on a monthly and annual basis, driven by the increase in the prices of vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, dairy, cheese, eggs, oils and fats, health care and transportation services.

The general consumer price index for the whole of the Republic reached 116.1 points for the month of September 2021, an increase of 1.6 percent compared to August, while inflation increased in September on an annual basis by 4.7 percent and reached 8 percent, compared to an average of 3.3 percent during the same month last year.

The Central Bank of Egypt aims to achieve an inflation rate of 7% (plus or minus two percentage points) on average during the fourth quarter of 2022.

The Statistics Authority attributed the increase in inflation on a monthly basis to the increase in the food and beverages section by 4.4%, due to the increase in the prices of the vegetables group by 23.5%, meat and poultry by 3.2%, fruits by 1.7%, dairy, cheese and eggs by 0.8%, and the oils and fats group. by 0.3%.

Furniture, fixtures, home equipment and maintenance increased by 0.2% due to an increase in the prices of glassware, tableware and household appliances by 0.5%, furniture and fixtures for carpets and other floor coverings by 0.3%, and household appliances by 0.3%.

The rise included the health care department, which increased by 0.5%, due to the increase in the prices of the outpatient services group by 0.7%, the hospital services group by 0.7%, the group of products, devices and medical equipment by 0.4%, and the prices of the transportation and communications department increased by 0.4% due to the increase in the prices of the group Spent on private transportation 0.9%, vehicle purchase group 0.2%, transportation services group 0.2%.

The Department of Culture and Entertainment recorded an increase of 0.2% due to the increase in the prices of the group of items and other recreational equipment and its belongings by 0.7%, the group of newspapers, books and stationery by 0.3%, the group of audio and image equipment, photographic equipment and information processing by 0.2%, and the group of organized tourist trips by 0.2%.

The prices of the restaurants and hotels section increased by 0.6%, due to the increase in the prices of the ready-made meals group by 0.6%, the hotel services group by 0.6%, and the miscellaneous goods and services section increased by 0.2% due to the increase in the prices of the personal care group by 0.2%, the personal belongings group by 0.1 %, a group of other services not classified elsewhere, 0.1%.

On the other hand, the prices of the alcoholic beverages and tobacco section decreased by -0.1% due to the decrease in the prices of the tobacco group by -0.1%. The prices of the clothing and shoes section also decreased by -0.2%, due to the decrease in the prices of the ready-made clothing group by -0.5%.

With regard to the reasons for the increase in inflation on an annual basis to 8% in September from 3.3% for the same month of the previous year, the Statistics Authority attributed the increase to the increase in the food and beverages section by (13.1%, due to the increase in the prices of the vegetables group by 38.1%, the prices of the oils and fats group by 18.3%, the prices of the fruit group by 14.6%, the prices of the meat and poultry group by 12.8%, the group of dairy, cheese and eggs by 8.3%, the group of other food products by 5.4%, the group of mineral and carbonated water and natural juices by 4.6%.

The prices of the cereals and bread group increased by 3.2%, the sugar and sugary foods group increased by 1.3%, the fish and seafood group increased by 1.2%, and the coffee, tea and cocoa group increased by 0.2%.

The rise included the alcoholic beverages and smoke section, which increased by 3% due to the increase in the prices of the two groups of smoke and alcoholic beverages, the clothing and footwear department, which increased by 1.7%, due to the increase in the prices of the cleaning, repair and rental of clothes by 6%, the other clothing and accessories group by 4.3%, the Islah group Shoes by 3.2%, ready-made clothes by 1.6%, and shoes by 1.1%.

The housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel section recorded an increase of 3.9% due to the increase in the prices of the electricity, gas and other fuel materials group by 9.1%, the housing maintenance and repair group by 2.7%, the calculated rent group for housing by 1.8%, the actual rent group for housing by 1.1%, the water group and various services related to housing by 0.8%.

The prices of the furniture, fixtures, household equipment and maintenance section increased by 2.4%, due to the rise in the prices of the furniture, fixtures, carpets and other floor coverings group by 3.9%, the household appliances group by 3%, the glassware group, tableware and household items by 2.6%, the group of goods and services used in House maintenance by 2.2%, home furnishings group by 1.6%, home and garden tools and equipment group by 1.4%.

The Health Care Department increased by 2.4% due to the increase in the prices of the outpatient services group by 5.7%, the hospital services group by 4%, the group of medical products, devices and equipment by 0.8%, and the Transportation and Communications Department recorded an increase of 3% due to the increase in the prices of the group spent on Private transportation by 10.4%, vehicle purchase group by 4.1%.

Statistics Authority data indicated that the telecommunications department rose by 0.1%, due to the increase in the prices of the telephone and fax services equipment by 2.5%, while the culture and entertainment department increased by 6.5%, due to the increase in the prices of the group of organized tourist trips by 11.7%, the group of equipment Sound, image, photographic equipment and information processing by 6.7%, the group of cultural and entertainment services by 4.4%, the group of other recreational items and equipment and its related items by (2.6%), the group of newspapers, books and stationery by 2.6%.

The prices of the education department also increased by 29.7% due to the increase in the prices of the general and technical secondary education group by 56.5%, the pre-primary and basic education group by 20.1%, the higher education group by 13.2%, the post-secondary and technical education group by 12.3%, and the restaurants and hotels department recorded An increase of 2.5% due to an increase in the prices of the hotel services group by 16.6%, and the ready meals group by 2.3%.

The Miscellaneous Goods and Services section recorded an increase of 9.1% due to the increase in the prices of another group of services not classified elsewhere by 37.6%, and the Personal Care group by 3%.
