Social media accounts circulated a shocking video from Tunisia, showing a girl being harassed in the middle of the street.
According to the circulating video, a young man was seen chasing a girl who was walking with another young man in the street, and surprised her by raising her short skirt, slapping her on the back and running away.
The video sparked anger among the tweeters, and one of them said: “Where is the law to take its right!” Another wrote: “Unfortunately, underdevelopment nests in the minds of the peoples of the region, so what is the fun? Then the young man with her, why did he not defend her?” Another commented: “The young man with her has no prestige.”
Watan was unable to verify the authenticity of the circulating video.
Sexual harassment in Tunisia
The Tunisian parliament ratified Law 58 on “Combating Violence against Women” on July 26, 2017, and it entered into force on February 15, 2018.
This law is considered a second revolution in the field of Tunisian women’s rights, after the “Personal Status” magazine, which was issued in August 1956. For the first time in Tunisia’s history, “sexual harassment” is included among the types of sexual violence against women and is officially criminalized .
It is considered an important gain for defending women’s rights, as Chapter 226 of the “Anti-Violence Against Women” law punishes harassers with two years in prison and a fine of five thousand dinars.
