The Moroccan newspaper “Akhbar Al-Youm” has stopped publishing due to a financial crisis afflicting it, while its publishing director and editor-in-chief is serving prison terms.
Narrowing by the authorities
The newspaper said, in a press release, that “Akhbar Al-Youm” is being restricted by preventing advertisements from reaching its pages. And public institutions refrain from paying the financial dues they owe to run the newspaper. And depriving her of her legitimate right to public support.
For their part, members of the editorial staff of the newspaper, which was established in 2009, condemned a unilateral decision taken by the administration. They point to mismanagement and express their hope that the newspaper can be saved.
The administration has not announced when the newspaper will be closed, but journalists in the editorial department said that the latest issue was released on Monday.
The announcement that Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper will be suspended from publication comes after judicial prosecutions of three of its journalists. Their supporters saw them as political issues.

A sexual assault case
Her uncle, Suleiman Raissouni, the newspaper’s editor, was arrested nine months ago, while he is still being held on a sexual assault case. He denies the accusation and his trial was postponed twice before the trial date was set for March 30th.
“It’s a terrible way to stop the newspaper, which is the voice of the voiceless,” said Rashid Al-Kharroubi, a journalist at the newspaper. Like my colleagues, I was informed of the decision on social media.

The family of “Akhbar Al-Youm” newspaper includes about forty journalists, knowing that it had about a hundred before the arrest of its director in 2018.
