Lieutenant-General Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said that the navigation traffic in the canal recorded, on Friday, a new record in the number and tonnage of ships crossing the canal, by crossing 72 ships from both directions without waiting, with a total net tonnage of 5.3 million tons.
He added that the navigation traffic today is the fifth highest daily net cargo in the history of the canal and the highest payload since the start of the emerging corona virus pandemic, achieving the highest daily revenue since the pandemic of $ 24.7 million.
The number of ships crossing the canal from the north direction reached 37 vessels with a net tonnage of 2.8 million tons, while the number of ships crossing from the south direction of the new shipping course of the canal without waiting for 35 vessels with a total net tonnage of 2.5 million tons.
Lieutenant General Rabie affirmed that the unprecedented records recorded by the daily navigation movement in the canal give a clear indication of the strategic importance of the Suez Canal in the maritime community as it is the shortest and fastest shipping route and the first and safest choice for global trade movement between East and West.
He indicated that the Suez Canal is ready to deal with all the global changes that the maritime transport industry is witnessing thanks to the continuous development projects in the navigational course of the canal, the flexible marketing policies and the advanced navigation services provided to customers.
The head of the authority explained that the big boom recorded by the daily navigation statistics is attributed to the increase in the number and tonnage of container ships and bulk vessels crossing the canal, as they are the most influential customers in increasing the canal’s revenues.
He pointed out that, on Friday, the navigation traffic recorded the transit of 21 giant container ships, with a total net tonnage of 3 million tons, and 28 bulk vessels, with a total net tonnage of 918 thousand tons, while the total of other categories of vessels crossing the Canal reached 23 vessels with a total net tonnage of 1.4 million tons.
Navigating traffic from the north was led by the giant container ship HMM LE HAVRE flying the flag of Panama with a total load of 235 thousand tons, on its voyage coming from the United Kingdom to the United Arab Emirates, while the giant container ship COSCO SHIPPING TAURUS, flying the Hong Kong flag came at the head of the convoy The south, with a total tonnage of 212 thousand tons, on its next voyage from Singapore and bound for Greece.
The canal also witnessed the crossing of 13 giant ships carrying more than 150,000 tons per ship, while 6 huge ships crossed the tonnage category ranging from 100 to 150 thousand tons per ship.
