The meeting that took place today, Monday, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett sparked widespread controversy on the communication sites, due to the appearance of the Israeli flag at the meeting for the first time in the history of the Egyptian-Israeli meetings.

Mubarak and Olmert in 2007

The political correspondent of Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Itamar Eichner, pointed out that in 2007 then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh, and there was no Israeli flag (behind Olmert).

He added, “Therefore, the Egyptian desire to raise the Israeli flag alongside the Egyptian flag in the first public meeting since it was held is certainly an important gesture.”

Al-Sisi also held a meeting with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Israeli flag was not present at the time.

Details of the meeting between Sisi and Bennett

For his part, the official spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency explained that the meeting deals with “discussing a number of bilateral issues between the two sides in various fields, as well as ways and efforts to revive the peace process, as well as the latest developments on the regional and international arenas.”

A senior Israeli political official said that “the center of the meeting will be an Egyptian effort to push investments to the countries of the region in the Gaza Strip. There is great interest in the matter on the part of businessmen in the countries of the region, and the Egyptians do not want to be caught by the train,” according to the Haaretz newspaper’s website.

An Israeli writer downplayed the importance of Bennett’s meeting with Sisi. Jackie Khouji, editor of Arab affairs at Military Radio, wrote in the newspaper, Maariv, that Bennett “will arrive in Egypt soon to meet Sisi, without having important files to carry, in addition to being inexperienced, and the Egyptians are well aware of these weaknesses in their new friend.” ».

Egyptian diplomatic sources had previously said that Bennett’s aides who led the preparatory contacts for the meeting, including the intelligence team that secretly visited Egypt last week, tried to push the meeting into an almost completely bilateral agenda.

Al-Sisi and the Israeli Prime Minister’s discussions

So that the discussions are limited to security coordination in Sinai, joint activities on the economic level, relations with other Arab countries, primarily Sudan, the issue of the Renaissance Dam, which the United States is pushing the Israeli occupation to mediate efforts in, the expected development from both sides in the energy file, and the future of the Gas Forum. Eastern Mediterranean, cooperation with Cyprus and Greece.

In the last file in particular, there are many developments, on top of which is the entry of the UAE as a partner with more than one-fifth of the shares of the Tamar gas field owned by the occupation in the eastern Mediterranean, and the recent agreement within the framework of the forum and bilateral relations to link the Cypriot Aphrodite field and the two Egyptian liquefaction units in Idku and Damietta.

Due to the possibility that these two agreements will reflect on the nature of the ownership of the pipeline network established between Egypt and the occupation, which is currently owned by a new company established specifically to own the pipeline, between the American “Noble Energy” and the Zionist “Delek”, and the “East Gas” company currently owned by the state, represented by the The General Intelligence and the Egyptian Petroleum Authority, which is currently proposed to be expanded to include Cyprus, and perhaps other countries, with the aim of benefiting from the two liquefaction units in Egypt, from which Israel will also benefit.

Informed sources have previously said that the meeting’s agenda will also discuss the executive steps of the occupation’s demand to tighten control over the common borders with the Gaza Strip, to prevent the diversion of weapons and raw materials used in the development of the Hamas missile system. This file was opened on more than one occasion.

Egyptian officials have asserted that they have made every effort to prevent the diversion of weapons to the Strip, but Tel Aviv still sees that there has been deliberate inaction at times, in the context of accommodations between Cairo and “Hamas”.
