Former Health Minister stated that Brazil is not in an electoral period and that President Jair Bolsonaro is not affiliated with any political party; general was at an event in Rio de Janeiro last Sunday
O federal government works to avoid strict punishment of the former Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, for having participated in a demonstration with the president Jair Bolsonaro last Sunday, 23. The Brazilian Army, for its part, does not hide its discomfort. The fear is that a light punishment will end up encouraging politicization within the barracks. This Thursday, the 27th, Bolsonaro came out in defense of Pazuello and said that he sees no problems in the participation of the former minister, indicating, even, which way the general should follow to justify his presence at the event. “It is a meeting that had no political bias, not least because I am not affiliated with any political party yet. It was a movement for freedom, democracy and support for the president, ”he said. In his defense of the administrative proceeding initiated by the Army command, Pazuello claimed, precisely, that the act in Rio de Janeiro was not a political party event, but an automobile tour. The former minister also said that the country is not in an electoral period and that President Bolsonaro is not affiliated with any political party.
One of the justifications of those who defend Pazuello’s punishment is that the lack of an army position can encourage politicization in the barracks. Commenting on Thursday the restrictive measures announced by governors and mayors, the president reaffirmed to the military that he expects them to act according to what the Constitution. The president has said that the army will not be called on to guarantee compliance with any measure that prevents the movement of people and also said that he expects the return to normality to happen quickly. Also on Thursday, during a lunch with military commanders in the Amazon, the president again complained about the polarization in the country. With an eye on next year’s presidential elections, he said that it is necessary that the population does not make any more mistakes. Bolsonaro also admitted that, currently, everything revolves around politics. “Nobody is here to make a political speech, but we are political beings. We have this opportunity, God gave this mission to us, let’s take advantage of it in a good way ”, he said.
