The seeds for its birth were sown in 1908. Fifteen thousand women demonstrated in New York City for shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. In view of these women’s demands, the Socialist Party of America declared National Women’s Day in 1909. However, the idea of organizing this day internationally came from a woman named Clara Jetkin.
She is Carla Jetkin .. Today’s Women’s Day is a reward for Carla’s idea of fighting for women’s rights. Clara Jetkin proposed International Women’s Day at the 1910 International Conference on Working Women in Copenhagen. One hundred women delegates from 17 countries attended the conference. They all unanimously approved Clara Jetkin’s proposal. Women’s Day was first celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. More than ten million women participated in the celebrations.
And for a few years since then different countries have been celebrating Women’s Day on different dates. During the 1917 war, Russian women launched a large-scale movement called ‘Food… Peace’. After that the then Russian Emperor Nicholas Ja-2 had to relinquish his throne. The provisional government at the time gave women the right to vote. That day is March 8. According to the Gregorian calendar, Women’s Day begins on March 8.
However, in 1975, the United Nations officially began celebrating Women’s Day. Celebrating this day every year with a special theme. In 2011, the centenary celebrations of International Women’s Day were also held. Technically speaking, this year marks the 110th International Women’s Day.
