Israel reported on Monday that it provided the Palestinians with the first shipment of vaccines against covid-19, in a total of 2,000 doses of vaccine from Moderna.
The vaccines were transferred to the West Bank occupied and will be used by medical teams from the Palestinian Authority, according to a statement from Cogat, Israel’s military liaison with palestinians.
THE Ministry of Health Palestinian confirmed the delivery in a statement released in the West Bank city of Ramallah, saying he would administer the doses to healthcare professionals working in facilities where they treat patients with Covid-19.
“The second category of people receiving doses of vaccines are those over 60 and those suffering from chronic diseases,” said the statement.
The ministry said it hopes to receive more 50 thousand doses of vaccines in the “next days”, but did not reveal the source.
Israel reserved 3,000 additional doses for the Palestinians, according to a Cogat official.
Israel emerged as a world leader in vaccinating its citizens. The Palestinian Authority has tried separately to secure its own doses and ordered a batch of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
Palestinians will also receive 35,000 to 40,000 doses of the Covax global vaccine sharing program in the coming weeks, said a World Health Organization on Monday.
