The presenter of a police program on TV Norte, an affiliate of SBT in Roraima, was threatened with death last Thursday, 1, after making a series of complaints about criminal factions and irregularities in the state government. Diego Santos, who is a journalist and presents the program “Verdade No Ar”, received an envelope in his home mail with his name, the words “the exact measure to silence any denunciation” and two 380 caliber bullets. The threat was denounced by the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) this Wednesday, 7. A police report was registered by the journalist in the 1st Police District of Boa Vista, which investigates the case.

After the incident, the journalist was escorted by security guards, as well as his family. In a note, Grupo Norte Comunicação showed solidarity to the employee and claimed to have a commitment to information, demanding that the authorities clarify the threat. “The Northern Communication Group will not tolerate any kind of threat and restriction of freedom and the practice of serious and critical journalism”, says the document. The National Federation of Radio Broadcasters also released a note of condemnation against the attack and said that the category will not be silent “in the face of the great denunciations received by the group of program presenters in the country of misconduct of authorities towards the people’s money”.
