Washington: Opposition to the death penalty is growing in the American South as well. Virginia became the first southern state to announce the abolition of the death penalty. The law repealing the sentence was signed Wednesday by state Governor Ralph Northam. Explained that they had a moral obligation to abolish the death penalty. “People are proud of Virginia’s history, except for the death penalty, so we want to erase that stain,” he said. Most executions (approximately 1400) have been carried out in Virginia since the United States became a British colony in 1608.
On the occasion, Governor Northam said that the death penalty was a wrong decision and that there was no discrimination in the sentencing. He said a large number of innocent, accused blacks had lost their lives with this punishment. That is not to say that the system will ever go in the right direction, and that it is inappropriate to impose the death penalty when there is no 100 percent accuracy that we are right in a case. Of the 377 people sentenced to death since 2000, 296 are non-black. In one case a black man was described as being three times more likely to be black than a white man.
