A team of architects created a floating city in Manhattan, which is characterized by being 100% self-sufficient. Innovation may be the key to the overcrowding problem that many cities around the world are experiencing.
One of the big problems of the 21st century is the fact that people who live in big cities are exhaust some of the resources rarest on the Planet. With the covid-19 pandemic, the concepts of sustainability and awareness took on a new form – and there are already new ideas to be developed.
In this sense, an architecture office – the 3deluxe – decided to build a project that matched these values in Manhattan, a city that lives with an excess population and that desperately needs more space.
The project developed by 3deluxe was commissioned by the organization #WeThePlanet (WTP) based in New York. The idea is to build a campus sustainable that is aligned with nature and be nice to people.
A 3deluxe thus conceived a real floating mobile city which is 100% self-sufficient, generating all the energy and water it needs.
“After the shock of the pandemic and the social polarization of recent years, there is an urge for positive change. It is time for architecture and urbanism to adopt a more ambitious approach to humanize our environment”, he said Dieter Brell, creative director of 3deluxe, in a statement.
The city will be a communicative platform that protects “all life on land and sea while advancing the design frontier,” according to 3deluxe.
The organization #WeThePlanet believes that buildings should give as much as they get. Therefore, the campus floating should use the latest technologies for air purification, together with algae wind farms, photovoltaics, marine power stations and bioreactors to ensure that the structure generates minimal emissions while being 100% self-sustaining.
The platform is also protected from sea level rise. In the future, if Manhattanites decide they need even more space, the structure could be expanded, says the Interesting Engineering.
A 3deluxe states that the platform project is positioned on “relevant social issues, such as climate protection, nature conservation, joint responsibility, openness and transparency”.
