The Kremlin’s main opponent arrived on Sunday in an area about 200 kilometers east of Moscow to be transferred to a penal colony where he will serve his sentence, a public body said.
“Alexei Navalny he arrived at an establishment of Russian prison services in the Vladimir region to serve his sentence, ”the Moscow public surveillance commission (ONK) said in a statement.
ONK Secretary General Alexei Melnikov told the Russian news agency Interfax that the Russian opponent, sentenced to two and a half years in prison, would be quarantined before being transferred to one of the establishments in the region.
According to sources interviewed by the agencies TASS e Ria Novosti, the political opponent of the Vladimir Putin regime will be transferred to penal colony No. 2, located in the small town of Pokrov, in the Vladimir region of European Russia.
According to the media, it is a “normal regime” colony with less severe conditions of detention and accommodating about 800 prisoners.
Last Friday, the head of the Russian prison services, Alexander Kalashnikov, assured that Navalny “was transferred to the place where he should have been by court order” and that was under “no threat to your life or health ”.
The opponent “will serve time under absolutely normal conditions,” he said, guaranteeing that “if he wishes, Navalny will participate in production activities”.
Legacy of the former Soviet Union, most prison sentences in Russia are served in prison camps, sometimes located far from everything. THE prisoners’ work, usually in sewing or furniture making workshops, is usually mandatory.
On Thursday, Navalny’s lawyers and family members announced his departure from the Moscow detention center, where he had been held since he was arrested.
Russian justice last week confirmed the anti-corruption activist’s conviction in a 2014 fraud case that he himself, many non-governmental organizations and Western politicians denounce as a politician.
Navalny was arrested on 17 January on his return from Germany, where he had spent nearly five months recovering from poisoning. The opponent accuses the Kremlin of poisoning him.
Alexei Navalny, who was also fined for “defamation”, awaits several court cases, including a fraud investigation, punishable by ten years in prison.
