The forecast is that the doses are distributed to the States and the DF next month; Fiocruz’s goal is to deliver 100 million immunizations between the end of August and the beginning of September
Another shipment of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (IFA) to produce vaccines against Covid-19 arrived in Brazil. The inputs landed at Rio de Janeiro International Airport – RioGaleão – on Saturday night, 17th. With the raw material, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) will produce around 10 million doses of AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine at the Institute of Technology in Immunobiologicals located in Bio-Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro. The forecast is for the doses to be delivered in August, after they have gone through the final processing and quality control steps. According to data from the Ministry of Health, AstraZeneca’s immunizing agent is the most applied in the country. So far, of the 154.7 million vaccines from different laboratories distributed to the States and the Federal District, more than 75.9 million are from Anglo-Swedish pharmaceuticals. About 55% of Brazilians have already received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine and 20% have completed the vaccination schedule.
The general director of Bio-manguinhos, Maurício Zuma, told the Young pan, at the beginning of the week, that Fiocruz will no longer be able to meet the goal of delivering 100 million doses of the vaccine by the end of July to the National Immunization Plan because of the delay in the IFA’s shipping schedule. The new goal now is to reach 100 million doses in late August or early September. The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, however, maintains the estimate of ending the year 2021 with 200 million doses delivered to the PNI. The production of vaccine with 100% national IFA, after a technology transfer agreement, is also behind schedule: it would start in October, now we are talking about November. For next year, Fiocruz already plans to distribute to the PNI around 180 million doses of the vaccine.
