Organizers of Olympics Tokyo announced on Sunday, 18, the first cases of covid-19 among competitors, according to the Reuters news agency. Games start next week.
Without giving further details, the ad said that two athletes from the same country, competing in the same sport, tested positive for covid-19. Both are staying in an athlete’s village, located in the Harumi district.
In total, 10 new cases of covid-19 linked to the Olympics were reported this Sunday, including a third athlete who was not staying in the village. It is a lower number than the 15 new cases registered this Saturday, 17.
South Africa also announced three positive tests for its football team. It was not clear whether the three cases were accounted for in the official announcement.
A South Korean member of the international Olympic committee also tested positive for the coronavirus upon arriving in Tokyo, despite being already vaccinated.
