Byong Choi, 83, died of a rare bone marrow infection on February 24. On the day of the funeral, the family received a handwritten hate letter, which read: “You are an Asian unless we have to put up with it.”
According to the Independent, the Seal Beach, Calif., police are already investigating the hate letter received by the Choi family.
“Now that Byong died, is an asian less we have to put up with at Leisure World… Damn Asians who are dominating our American community! It is not an acceptable situation for those who live here – a true statement !! ”, read the letter. “Caution! Pack your bags and go back to your country of origin. ”
Claudia Choi, the victim’s daughter, believes the missive was sent by a resident of the retirement community of which her parents were a part, Leisure World. However, until Byong passed away, the couple never had a problem with racism.
Asians make up about 11% of the population of Seal Beach City. According to Choi’s daughter, the change in people’s attitudes towards Asian Americans it occurred mainly during the covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the spread of phrases like “Chinese virus” and “Kung Flu”.
Claudia Choi also blames former President Donald Trump. Cited by Independent, pointed out that the parents also had pro-Trump neighbors at Leisure World.
Investigators are examining the DNA evidence on the letter, fingerprints and handwriting to arrest the person involved in this hate crime. Detectives will also analyze videos from surveillance cameras and question community members.
