Will the fifth forgive the third?
In recent days, President Salome Zurabishvili has created a clear political embarrassment for the Georgian Dream over the need for a coalition government, which she voiced in an interview with the French edition of the Weekly Magazine (JDD).
According to Nika Melia, the leader of the United National Movement, the ruling party no longer trusts the president so much that it expects the pardon of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili and tries to catch him.
Melia called the information that “very credible” that “Several top prosecutors in the prosecutor’s office have been instructed to urgently prepare the ground for new criminal cases.” – Exactly in case President Zurabishvili pardons Saakashvili.
Georgian Dream does not see the prospect of pardoning Mikheil Saakashvili. As one of the party leaders, MP Shalva Papuashvili, told reporters on September 28, there is no such expectation in the ruling team.
It is clear to the lawyers that the fastest way to release the ex-president in case of arrest is to pardon Zurabishvili. The president can pardon those detainees who have not applied for pardon.
There is another way. In case of Saakashvili’s arrest, Ukraine may be involved in the case. Kiev has the right to request his extradition.
If he was really arrested, how could the ex-president leave prison? Read more in Lela Kunchulia’s article.
Is the EU considering abolishing visa-free travel for Georgia and other Eastern Partnership countries?
Yesterday, euobserver reported, citing an internal EU document, that the EU might discuss visa-free travel to Georgia, Moldova and the Balkans.
According to the publication, this was initiated by France, Italy and Germany. The reason is the unfounded asylum claims and illegal migration from these countries.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier soon responded to this information and called it false information.
Davit Zalkaliani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, also denies the possible start of discussions by the European Union on the suspension of visa-free travel to Georgia, Moldova and the Balkans. He also calls the published information a lie.
“I want to reassure everyone and also disappoint the people who were very upset by this story. I know there is great excitement in our opponents and it is unbelievable when opponents rejoice in the likely failure of the country and I want to disappoint them and tell them that this is a very big lie. This article does not specifically talk about Georgia, but also about Moldova and the Eastern Balkans, and not only has the number of asylum seekers increased, on the contrary, the number of asylum seekers from Georgia to the EU has decreased by 75%. “So this is a big lie, nothing threatens us, everything is very good.” – Zalkaliani said.
The budget deficit is at an all-time high – what does that mean for us?
Georgia’s budget has not had such a deficit as it has today for the last ten years. In the first 6 months of 2021, budget revenues are one billion GEL less than expenditures in the same period, and the budget deficit reached 7.6%.
The main reason for the deficit is the increased costs and reduced revenues during the pandemic period, despite the fact that in 2021 the economy started a slow recovery compared to the previous year and the budget received more money than planned in the first 6 months of this year.
According to the Economic Freedom Act, the budget deficit should not exceed 3%. In 2021, this figure is twice as high as 7%. Under the same law, a country’s foreign debt cannot be more than 60% of GDP. However, the most common way to fill the budget deficit is foreign debt. Georgia also reached an all-time high with increased foreign debt during the pandemic and now wants to reduce it to 54.6% by the end of the year.
According to experts, in a short period of time, the deficit budget will not affect the daily lives of citizens, but if the country does not solve this problem, it will lose the trust of international financial institutions and the deficit budget will also affect the income of citizens.

Ilia II publishes statement on “Susi Materials” and accuses part of the media of double standard
The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II responds to the spread of “Susa materials” with a statement.
“It is impossible to distinguish between truth and falsehood in published files of unknown origin; One thing is clear: this material has allowed the forces hostile to the Church to spread rumors that slander, defame, honor and reputation, in which several clergymen known for their scandalous actions, the so-called clergy, are actively involved. “Theologians in the media and some television” – says the Patriarch.
Ilia II’s statement speaks about the double standard of media. The patriarch points to the promotion of crime on the part of the media.
“There is a double standard for these televisions and the media in general: the public remembers well the drastic negative reaction they (as well as everyone else) had not so long ago to the broadcast of footage of members of the media and other individuals.” And now they themselves are the perpetrators of crime – the main and most widespread perpetrators of slander, including on a selective basis.
E.g. Not to mention the earlier important events, nothing was aired on their air even about the arrests of priests and the storming of the patriarchate; Is this very important information ?! ” – We read in the letter of the Patriarch.
Artificial Island – a project that changes the natural configuration of Batumi
“Ambassador Group” crosses the contours of an artificial island on the coast of Batumi. The government, although the impact on the environment has not been studied, supports the project, and part of the people of Batumi are afraid of the idea that will change the city forever.
Ltd. “The city has practically no land left. This will be a new territory, a new development zone “, – This is how they see the future of Batumi in the company “Ambassador Batumi Island”, which was given 90 hectares of land to create an artificial island in the Black Sea. It includes the two-kilometer coastline of Bartskhani and Tamar settlements.
“Ambassador Batumi Island” Ltd. (this company was created especially for the construction of an artificial island in the summer of 2021) is financing the project “Ambassador Group”, which owns a number of hotels in Georgia, including Tbilisi and Kachreti.
Pridon Katamadze, one of the founders of Ambassador Batumi Island, told RFE / RL that an artificial island would penetrate 50-60 hectares into the sea:
“The first phase of research has shown that this coastal zone – Bartshana-Benz area – is the most sustainable. It is the least affected by the aggressive wave, it is submerged, less erosive and therefore it was decided to implement this project on this very spot. Preliminary studies have already been conducted. “
However, the main – environmental impact, geological and batimetric studies have not yet been conducted. Pridon Katamadze is sure that an artificial island in the sea will be built in 4 years, and in 7-8 years the island will be settled – the construction of buildings and infrastructure will be completed.
