British health authorities have identified a new variant of the covid-19 coronavirus in England, which they have named B1525, with the same E484K mutation found in other, more infectious variants, the British health directorate said on Tuesday.
So far, according to the Directorate-General for Health of England (Public Health England), 38 cases of this variant were found locally, which has also been detected in countries such as Canada, Nigeria and Denmark.
“PHE is monitoring data on emerging variants very closely and, when necessary, public health interventions will be carried out, such as extra testing and enhanced contact tracking,” said medical director, Yvonne Doyle.
In addition to the B117 variant, which has already spread to dozens of countries including Portugal, and the new B1525, health authorities are investigating two more variants first identified in England as they also present the E484K mutation, which is common in other variants detected in the Brazil and South Africa.
In the past few weeks, large-scale testing has been carried out in regions where variants have been identified, including door-to-door operations, to try to contain the transmission.
The UK has been sequencing the virus genome from thousands of tests to try find mutations and potential new variants to potentially help scientists develop new, more effective vaccines.
The UK recorded 799 deaths from covid-19 on Monday, totaling 118,195 since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, the highest balance in Europe and the fifth worldwide, behind the United States, India, Brazil and Mexico.
The two vaccines developed in Russia, Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona, are effective against the British variant of the new coronavirus, Russian consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor announced on Tuesday, the agency said. EFE.
“The protective effect was demonstrated by neutralizing reactions using serological samples from people who received Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona and developed antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 ″, said Rospotrebnadzor on the official social network page Facebook, quotes the Spanish agency.
“The serum of vaccinated people effectively neutralized both the British variant do coronavírus like the coronavirus itself, which does not contain the set of mutations characteristic of the British variant, ”said the Russian federal agency.
A Rospotrebnadzor did not reveal how many people were tested in this study conducted by the State Center for Virology and Biotechnology “Vektor”, also creator of EpiVacCorona.
On Monday, the official news agency TASS reported that EpiVacCorona was also effective against South African and Brazilian strains, without providing further details.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to analyze the effectiveness of Russian vaccines against new variants of the coronavirus and, if necessary, to carry out further research to adapt them.
The deadline set for the first report was March 15 and then a new report every half year, but the agency Rospotrebnadzor anticipated the results for this Tuesday.
In January, the Rospotrebnadzor agency announced to the Russian media, “again without giving further details”, emphasizes EFE, that the second Russian vaccine is 100% effective.
Sputnik V was registered in Russia in August 2020 and is 91.6% effective, according to provisional analyzes of phase III clinical trials published this month in the journal The Lancet.
After the announcement, Putin was criticized for having announced Sputnik V without having completed all the rehearsals, but now use is permitted in 26 countries. As for EpiVacCorona, clinical trials were completed in late September and in October authorized its use in Russia.
