The secretary of regional development of São Paulo stated that the government observed a drop in the number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 in the State
The regional development secretary for Sao Paulo, Marco Vinholi, affirmed, this Tuesday, 30, that the State began to reap the fruits of the beginning of the red phase the São Paulo Plan and the implementation of the emergency phase. “We started to reap the rewards of the beginning of the red phase and also of the emergency phase. There was a slight slowdown in terms of hospitalizations for Covid-19, but we still have a long way to go in order to contain the pandemic of the coronavirus in this most acute moment ”, said the secretary, in an interview with Morning newspaper. Vinholi pointed out that only restriction measures combined with vaccination will guarantee a return to normality. “Immunization is what will ensure that we can return to normal. Only vaccination can bring us back to this fundamental concept of life. ” According to him, the decrease in the number of people hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (UTI) over 70 years old is a clear reflection of vaccination. “We note that immunization has had a positive impact among healthcare professionals. This was fundamental for us to reach this most acute period of the pandemic with our front line in conditions to face it ”, he analyzed. “The age groups that have already been immunized are beginning to experience a much smaller impact from the pandemic.”
Regarding the ICU bed occupancy rates, the secretary pointed out that the regions of São José do Rio Preto, Araçatuba, Presidente Prudente and Sorocaba are the four regions most impacted by the pandemic at that time. “We have practically all regions of the state with over 90% occupancy of ICU beds or close to that. The only two below are the Vale do Paraíba and Baixada Santista region ”, he explained. He said that the red phase is implemented after 80% occupancy of the ICU beds. In addition, the Contingency Center also analyzes the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants to propose the phase regression. “If we look at this set, the State is still very impacted”, replied Vinholi about the State’s chance to return to the orange phase, with less restrictions. “The expectation is that on April 11th we will be able to have good news, but that will depend on what we are doing now. We are in a still very critical period. The government increased ICU beds by 140% over that period, but even so the health system is very impacted and struggling every day to overcome these limits. ” The secretary stressed that the next few days will be crucial for the slowdown in the spread of the coronavirus and reinforced the request to the population: “Quarantine is not a vacation”.
He believes that the joint mobilization of the state government and city halls was effective in curbing people going to the coast during the early holiday. “The waterfront closed during this period, in addition to sanitary barriers with the support of all our public security along the coast of São Paulo. We have been passing this message on to the population all the time. We achieved a 55% reduction in the Anchieta-Imigrantes flow, 47% in Tamoios and a little over 60% in Mogi-Bertioga. We managed to hold the flow, the impact, during this period. But what will really give a better result is the population’s awareness ”, he considered.
Marco Vinholi considers that the management of the new Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, can be an important step towards greater awareness among the population. “We here, since the beginning of the pandemic, have sought understanding, support around fighting the pandemic. What we did from the first moment was to fight and defend the population of São Paulo using what science, health and rationality say. We seek this partnership with the Federal government at all times and we will continue to seek it ”, he said. “The other day I was asked: ‘Are you a mayor in the state of São Paulo?’ I say no. It is impossible that anyone can remain a denialist seeing so many deaths in his city. And we have observed, throughout this period, people who were negationists started to have a different posture ”, he analyzed. The secretary expects the same to happen with the federal government, but pointed out that there is still a lot of mistrust with the Ministry of Health for what the ministry has presented so far in the fight against the coronavirus.
